AXV-4 FLIGHT IMAGES

This page shows images taken of the AXV-4 launch, in August, 1996. The images are framegrabbed stills from the AspireSpace onboard CCD colour video camera, which transmitted the images to the ground via the main onboard telemetry system.

IMAGE DETAILS

Yes, this is the right way up ! This framegrabbed video image shows the view from the AXV-4 rocket test launch. This image is taken during the descent, after the parachute failed to open at apogee. (note the smoke trail, as the rocket passes it upside down !).

The parachute did eventually deploy - late, but only just before the rocket hit the ground. This was not particularly useful given the speed the rocket was travelling.

Although the rocket itself was not too healthy following the crash (A couple of dents in the payload section and booster section), the onboard video camera and telemetry system was perfectly intact in its crash-proof housing.
