This opportunity is for Caltech students only
Project Description:
Development and testing of large-area (50cm X 800cm) Resistive Plate Counters to be used in the MINOS detector. Construction techniques and tests using cosmic-rays for detector response over large areas will be performed. Mostly laboratory work with some computer analysis of collected data.
Background Information:
The Main-Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS) experiment will use a neutrino beam from Fermilab (near Chicago) aimed towards a very large detector in northern Minnesota to search for oscillations between mvon neutrinos and tau or electron neutrinos. The size of the detector requires new types of detection technology.
