Both Caltech and Non-Caltech students will be considered

Project Title:

NMR Spectroscopy

Project Description:

SURF projects can be provided for up to four students in the firld of NMR spectroscopy as applied to chemistry. It is mandatory for students who apply to have taken freshman chemistry and have some chemistry laboratory experience. Organic chemistry, at the level of Chemistry 41, is also very desirable, as is some practical experience with the use of computers. Because NMR spectrometer time is a precious commodity in modern research laboratories it will often be necessary to start work early in the morning and/or be willing to work nights and weekends. Consequently, this is absolutely not a recommended area of research if you look on SURF as a paid summer vacation with banker's hours. We have had a number of SURF strudents from other universities in the past, including Rice, Wesleyen, and Harvary Universities, as well as the Universities of Toronto and Chicago. We will be glad to consider SURF applications from students at other universities although space is limited.

The project description for this SURF is six pages long. We suggest that Caltech students come to the SURF Office and read the description, and that non-Caltech students request a FAX copy from the SURF Office.
