TurboCell Licensing Capabilities
The TurboCell
PC Driver offers network administrators the ability
to restrict users' access to the wireless network by means
of a special TurboCell license number.
The license number is based on a number of factors, including:
- The radio card's unique internal MAC Address
- The operating system on which the card is used
- The System
Access Pass Phrase for connecting to the TurboCell
network
- The Data
Rate the user has licensed
If any of the factors listed above is changed, the network
administrator can create a new license number to enable
the change. Any changes made by the user (e.g. increasing
the data rate) without a parallel change in the license
number will cause the user to lose connection with the
ISP Base Station.
By keying on the radio card's MAC address and the user's
operating system, the license number helps to discourage
theft of hardware and software. The license number allows
Wireless ISP's to offer service for a particular radio
card used in a particular operating system, and allows
them to charge differing amounts for connecting Windows
NT/2000 file servers and Windows 95/98 laptops.
In addition, the card is licensed to connect to a particular
wireless network by use of the System Access Pass Phrase.
This enables the Wireless ISP to protect their investment
by restricting the card's usage to their own network.
Finally, the card is licensed to run at a particular
data rate. The service provider may choose to partition
wireless bandwidth by setting the card to run at a set
data rate. The license number prevents the user from changing
his or her data rate in order to gain more bandwidth than
they have paid for.
