PingFill
Throughput Test
The PingFill throughput test is included in special versions
of the KarlNet configuration utility, and is useful in
testing the overall throughput of your network connections
between two points.
In order to test network throughput, the Ping Fill Test
dynamically fills the network connection with ICMP Echo
(ping) packets and waits for the responses from the target
station. Since each packet sent is echoed back to the
sender, this tests the overall throughput in both directions.
The PingFill test is useful for testing network throughput
between any KarlNet unit and any other computer connected
to the unit. Special care must be taken in using this
test, however, as it completely saturates the network
with packets, without overloading systems connected to
the network.
The speed at which the target station responds to the
ICMP Echo packets is crucial to correctly assess the speed
of the link. The IP stacks in some PC operating systems,
such as earlier versions of Microsoft Windows, often do
not respond quickly enough to the ICMP Echo packets to
obtain an accurate assessment of your network throughput.
When running the Ping Fill test to some systems, your
results may be slightly lower than normal throughput.
